Do’s and Don’ts - Tips and pointers for Text-roleplaying

No auto-hitting or god-moding.
If you’ve been roleplaying for any length of time, you probably know the dirty words auto-hitting, god-modding and power playing.

If you’re new to the game these three no-no’s are exactly what they sound like. It’s basically taking all regard for the cooperative story telling process that IS role playing, and throwing it out the window. Not every punch is going to hit, your character can not read everyone’s minds, or scare everyone around them. You can’t play someone else’s character. Not only is it rude, and inconsiderate but it’s very, very annoying.

It is kosher, however, if you are given consent from a fellow player to God-mod slightly in your post. If this is the case, please include an out of character note and only do so much as you have been given permission to do!

One Liners – No no
It’s also pretty inconsiderate to reply and only give a sentence or so to your friends to work with. Most people put lots of time, and thought into their characters and the story, so please, be courteous and give your friend’s more to go off of than one sentence – they’ll do the same for you!

Take Turns
Remember, this is cooperative play; we all have to take turns. Most RP that you are going to be doing is going to have a certain order, don’t jump out of that order unless you’ve clarified with partners that it is alright, and it’s necessary to the storyline. This is a turn based storyline we’re working with here, not a free for all!

Communication
Life gets in the way, posts can’t be made all the time – but please, do not go off for extended stays without warning your friends. It only takes a few minutes to drop an LOA message, and everyone will understand that you’ve got to be gone for a while.

If you fail to alert fellow members that you’re going to be going away, and you disappear while it is your turn this effectively locks up the story. No one can post until you have come back from your trip and that’s no fun. Story lines and entire RP’s crumble and die because of characters disappearing for months.

To avoid an RP dying, understand that if you are gone for more than 2 weeks without any sort of warning that your turn may be skipped, and your character lightly NPC’d to push the plot along, or even push your character out of the plot altogether. No one will be killed, maimed, etc during these moments, but your character will be moved for the advancement of the rest of the group.

Be observant!!
No one likes getting looked over or skipped – so please, for the sake of your friends read posts! Don’t ignore, or skim posts and only hit the ones that you really want to read. You might miss something a friend’s character has said or done that will directly affect your own, and if you don’t acknowledge that… Then what? Not only does that create a hitch in the RP, but it may hurt a friend’s feelings!

Spelling, Grammar, Dialogue etc…
Make sure to try your hardest to keep things easy to read and understand. Run your post through spell check before you submit it, read through it once more to make sure you tie everything together.
